I have not written a blog post in quite awhile. I feel like I have not had anything new or helpful to say, so when that happens, I don’t say anything. I don’t want to contribute to the noise that is out there on Facebook and so many art related sites. You know the noise I mean, hum-bragging about awards, sales and shows, the urging to sign up for workshops and classes, and the endless requests to vote for artwork in online contests. It gets very tiring and I can’t imagine it actually generates any sales, collector contacts or new students.
I’ve decided to take the opposite approach–I still post my paintings, but I try not to share anything other than useful information for other artists / students. I post my sketches, paintings, studies and demos and allow them to speak for themselves. By being quiet, I can best gauge which pieces evoke the strongest reactions without leading the viewer on in any way. I have not seen a decline in traffic, interest, enrollment or sales, the approach has had the exact opposite effect.
I believe visual art should speak for itself, and will continue to stay quiet and just listen.
